Elisha and The Syrians
8. Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp. 9. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. 10. And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice. 11. Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? 12. And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. 13. And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 14. Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about. 15. And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? 16. And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. II Kings 6: 8 - 17
Quite a few years ago I was renting a house and had to pay quite a lot of money for the cleaning deposit. My children and I had gotten all settled in and were happy enough there. We were very pleased to know that our neighbors were nice people and we could trust them. Margaret was always looking out for her neighbors and helping to keep an eye on things in the neighborhood so it was easy to talk to her and confide in her. One thing she warned me about was that my landlord was a slum lord and crook and would do anything to cheat you. "You might as well know that you'll never get your cleaning deposit back because he cheats every one out of the deposit no matter how well you clean the house." Margaret informed me. She would know because she had seen renters come and go in that rent house and it was always the same; they were always cheated out of the cleaning deposit. I wasn't too concerned about it because I had just moved in and wasn't planning to move out for a while, but it was always in the back of my mind.
As time passed, things went wrong in the house and I would always have to call the landlord who was not efficient in getting the problem solved and so we were always left suffering with the problem for a while. It would usually take me several calls to get him to move and get the item fixed. I would work hard trying to vacuum the pool without success; it was impossible and I would have to pour tons of pool chemicals into it and still it would turn green right away. I knew my niece Val was a pool cleaner and so I called her one day to come and help me figure out what was wrong. As she tried to vacuum the pool she could tell that it was not vacuuming properly so we went into the pool house and took the valve apart. "This is the problem." Val said. "You have a broken valve and it is in the closed position so you'll never get it vacuumed. You need to tell your landlord to get it fixed." So that's what I did and got nowhere. He didn't want to spend any money on fixing the pool. Not only did we have trouble with the cleaning, but the pool light would fall out of its place and hang down causing me to worry about electrocution while we were swimming. After all that, I decided to drain the old pool and not swim in it at all. After all the plaster was gone in a lot of places and the gunnite was showing through at the bottom and was that way when we moved in.
Anyway, time passed and then there was a horrible smell from under the kitchen. I tried to look in through the small vent holes under the kitchen and could see water standing underneath. We had been having lots of trouble with waterbugs coming into the house and so I knew why they were so bad. I had dated a Christian guy who was a plummer by profession and so I called him to come over and see what the problem was. After he saw the problem he told me to call my landlord; that I had a leak under the kitchen. So again. I called my landlord and told him the new problem. I told my landlord that my friend, who was a plummer, had informed me of the leak. "Well have him do the work and send me a bill." my landlord said. So I notified my friend about the job of repair. My friend wasn't available to do the work so I had to depend on my landlord's employees. After waiting for weeks for them to come and do the repairs, I gave up and called the health department and told them of the health problem and that my landlord wasn't doing anything to fix it. That same week an inspector from the health department came and investigated it and filed a complaint. Immediately my landlord sent someone out to start repairs on the leak. The worker had to cut a large hole in the floor of the kitchen to get to the pipes. After cutting the pipes, they found out that they didn't have the right pipe fittings to go on it and had to go buy one to fit it. They placed a piece of plywood over the large hole and left. A few weeks went by before they could get back to finishing the plumbing repairs but finally they did. It took months for that water to dry up underneath the kitchen.
There were so many things that went wrong or broke in that house. It was December 23, and the coldest winter we had ever had when a water pipe froze on the top of the house causing water to gush down in torrents into the family room flooding everywhere and soaking everything. Fortunately when I called my landlord that time, he didn't hesitate and called a cleaning company to come and extract the water out of the carpet. After endless vacuuming and rearranging the furniture to other rooms, it was finally done. But then they had to raise up the carpets, prop them up and put huge fans to try to dry out the carpet and floor. We nearly froze because of the cold weather outside and then the freezing wind inside it was a miracle we didn't get pneumonia.
After two years, we finally decided to move out. I got my sister (who owned a cleaning company), to come and help me clean the whole house. It was cleaner than when I moved in and I thought I would have no problem getting my cleaning deposit back. But sure enough, the landlord decided that it wasn't clean enough and he was unhappy how I left the pool: empty and with the pool light dangling down. Anyway, I was mentally prepared and challenged to fight him so I sued him for the amount of the cleaning deposit. Then he counter sued me for the repairs and refurbishing of the pool: an extra $350.00. I got letters from my friend the plummer, my niece, the professional pool cleaner, and my sister, who owned the cleaning company stating the condition of the house at the time and the problems I had to endure. And just how hard it was to get the landlord to jump into action when things needed to be done and repaired. After several weeks of preparation it was my court date. The whole week before the court date I prayed constantly day and night and was so nervous about it all because I had never been through anything like this before in my life. It was time to go into the court and I found out that I was completely alone, by myself, and he had all his workers there with him to back him up. The judge gave him his time to state his case and then it was my turn. I was so surprised that my voice was loud and clear and didn't shake and I stated my case very dignified and with strength. Then I paused to take a breath and that's when my landlord and his cohorts started all talking at once to try to confuse and cover me up with their blabbing so I wouldn't get to say what I wanted to say. I was so thankful that I had written everything down that I had wanted to say because right at that moment the judge told us to just hand in everything we had and he would review it all. We were excused then to wait for the judge's decision which would come to us in the mail.
It was raining hard as I hurried out to my car trying to get away from the most miserable episode that I had ever been through in my life. Sitting in my car I felt the tension and stress starting to release and then I started to cry. "THERE WERE FIVE AGAINST ONE!" I sobbed as I started my car. Never had I felt so alone. Then a little clear voice said, "BUT YOU HAD TEN-THOUSAND ANGELS BY YOUR SIDE." "WHAT?" as I looked around trying to see where the voice came from in the dark. Nobody was there. Driving down the road I tried to relax some more and forget that evening, but then it all started again. "THERE WERE FIVE AGAINST ONE!" I tuned up again, this time crying harder, trying not to, while busy wiping tears away with the back of my hand, because it was hard enough to see in the rain without me crying too. Then the voice came a little stronger, "BUT, YOU HAD TEN-THOUSAND ANGELS BY YOUR SIDE." "WHAT?" Then my crying stopped and I started to think where that voice was coming from. I drove on for miles trying to not think of anything but then I couldn't help myself and the emotions swelled up, tears welled up again and it started all over again. "THERE WERE FIVE AGAINST ONE!" And then the beautiful voice came again slower but louder and more firm, "BUT, MY CHILD, YOU HAD TEN-THOUSAND ANGELS BY YOUR SIDE." Then tears of joy started flowing out and I let them flow.
A couple of weeks later I got my news that I had won the suit and that his counter suit had been thrown out. I was so elated. Then a few days later, I got a check from my old landlord and a letter stating how he thought there had been a miscarriage of justice. What did I care what HE thought, for God was on my side and ten-thousand of his angels.
I started thinking about those ten-thousand angels and whether God would send so many angels just for me. Maybe it was me, maybe it was my own brain thinking up that whole scenario of ten-thousand angels being by my side. But no, I would have never made up anything like that because I was always taught that we have A GUARDIAN ANGEL to protect us. So I would have believed and thought that my one and only guardian angel was there with me, not ten-thousand. So I believe that God sent many angels, just like He did for Elisha, to be with me and protect me. If only my eyes could have been opened to see them. Ah, if only my crooked landlord's eyes could have been opened... What a glorious day it will be to see my Lord in the air when He comes to get us and my eyes will be opened then to see all the holy angels ten-thousand times ten-thousands, and thousands and thousands. What a happy day it will be!
"Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for his lovingkindness, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield, For our heart rejoices in him. Because we trust in His holy name. Let Thy lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, According as we have hoped in Thee." Psalms 33: 18-22
